Honolulu is the capital and city of largest populatioin of Hawaii on the island of Oahu. The name Honolulu means "place of shelter" or "sheltered bay".

The city is divided into twelve neighborhoods and/or districts including: Downtown Honolulu, The Arts District, Capitol District, Kaka'ako, Ala Moana, Waikiki, Manoa/Makiki, Nu'uanu/Pauoa, Waialae/Kahala, East Honolulu, Kalihi/Palama, Salt Lake/Aliamanu, and Moanalua.

Downtown Honolulu is the financial and governmental center for all of the Hawaiian Islands with the centerpiece being Aloha Tower.

The Arts District is located on the edge of eastern Chinatown that is chock full of art galleries and cultural instituations. The notable venues are the historic Hawaii Theatre (a historic Vaudeville theatre and cinema listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places) and Merchant Street Historic Distric with some of the more famous museums and structures.

The Capitol District is home to the state government buildings including the Capitol building, Iolani Palace, and the statue of King Kamehameha I.

Kaka'ako contains two major shopping areas, Ward Warehouse and Ward Centre. The beautiful Kakaako Waterfront Park is also located in the area.

Ala Moana boast the Ala Moana Center, the "World's Largest Open Air Shopping Center". The Center has over 300 shops and is considered one of the finest shopping malls in the world.

Manoa/Makiki are residential areas and are also home to the main campus of the University of Hawaii.
